Description
It is used with other medications to prevent and control seizures. It also relieves nerve pain following shingles (a painful rash due to herpes zoster infection).
Gabix is a new antiepileptic drug structurally similar to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the endogenous amino acid L-leucine. Chemically, gabapentin is 1-(aminomethyl)-cyclohexane acetic acid. Its molecular formula is C9H17NO2.
Action
Pharmacology: Mechanism of Action: Gabapentin has proven affinity for a particular site in brain tissues, e.g., neocortex and hippocampus. In addition, It also has analgesic activity.
Indications/Uses
In Epilepsy: Adjunctive therapy treating partial seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and children ≥six years. Additionally, Monotherapy in treating partial seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and adolescents ≥12 years.
Neuropathic Pain: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), peripheral diabetic neuropathies, and trigeminal neuralgia in adults.
